Marquard, De Leon Earn Tennis Weekly Honors


UC Irvine sophomore Luca Marquard and Cal State Fullerton junior Camille De Leon garnered the tennis weekly honors with stellar performances for their teams.

Marquard Helps UC Irvine To Near Upset of Ranked Foe

UC Irvine sophomore Luca Marquard (Bensheim, Germany/Pepperdine) won two singles matches including a win versus a player on a ranked team, earning Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.
The No. 2 singles player for the Anteaters tallied a 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory over No. 71 Boise State’s Toby Mitchell and defeated Furman’s Matt Browne 6-1, 6-2 in his most recent match.
Marquard’s key win versus his BSU opponent and UCI’s 4-3 victory over Furman helped Irvine move from 69 to 57 in the ITA rankings.

The sophomore also competed at the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship last weekend where he advanced to the quarter finals with Caryl Hernandez.

DeLeon Flourishes For Streaking Cal State Fullerton

Helping her squad win its seventh straight match, Cal State Fullerton junior Camille De Leon (La Mirada, Calif./Troy HS) claimed Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.

De Leon scored victories in singles and doubles action to help the Titans upset No. 56 Hawai‘i, 4-2, to improve to 3-0 in Big West play.  The win streak, Big West start, and current 10-1 overall record are all program bests.

She helped CSF win the doubles point, partnering with Alexis Valenzuela at the No. 1 position to defeat Sarah Gealer and Klara Pribylova, 6-4.  De Leon then put the Titans up 3-1 in the match with her 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Sarah Gealer.

Valenzuela and DeLeon are 7-0 together in doubles.
