First Place Finishes Showcased In Track And Field Weekly Awards

The four winners of the first Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards in 2016 had first place efforts at their respective meets.

Cal State Fullerton freshman Thaddeus Smith (Duarte, Calif./Damien HS) had an outstanding start to his collegiate career with three first-place finishes at the Riverside Community College Quadangular Meet, earning him Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Year accolades.  He won the 100-meters in 10.53 and the 200-meters in 21.11, and ran the second leg of the winning 4x100 relay squad that finished in 40.97, topping squads from RCC, Pepperdine and UC Riverside.  All three marks rank No. 1 in the Big West.

Cal State Fullerton junior Janaya Shorty (Victorville, Calif./Bellflower HS) captured her second career Big West Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week honor after posting two winning efforts at the RCC Quadrangular Meet.  She ran an 11.87 in the 100-meters and a 23.92 in the 200-meters.  The 200m mark is No. 1 in the Big West, while Shorty ranks second in the league in the 100m.

Amidst rainy and windy conditions, that did not stop Long Beach State senior Kody Rodison from unleashing a monster throw in the hammer and claiming Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors.  He finished first with a toss of 201-2 (61.31m) and the Beach went on to finish 1-2-3 in the event, beating out competitors from UC Davis and California.  Robison’s mark ranks No. 3 nationally, and first in the West Region and Big West.

UC Riverside junior Breana Jemison (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) nabbed the Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week award after unleashing a national-best mark in the shot put at the RCC Quadrangular Meet.  She won the event in 51-0.75 (15.56m) to qualify for the conference meet.  Jemison also placed second in the discus, throwing 145-11 (44.47m), and seventh in the hammer with a mark of 131-3 (40.00m).  She ranks ninth in the West Region, and 11in the nation, in the discus with her effort.
