Big West Golf Release - March

Big West Shines At Del Walker Intercollegiate:
The Cal Poly men’s team captured its first team championship in three years last month when it edged host Long Beach State by one stroke in the Del Walker Classic at the Virginia Country Club.  The Mustangs posted a four-person final-round 282 for a 54-hole two-under-par 838 total, the second-lowest total in program history. Four of the five Mustangs finished in the top 15 with junior Cole Nygren, who carded a final-round 72 for a one-under-par 209 total, leading the way with a fifth place finish.

A day before securing their team title, Coach Scott Cartwright’s Mustangs posted a four-person 268 total in the afternoon round on the 6,562-yard, par-70 course, bettering the old mark of 269 set by the 2006-07 Cal Poly team at the Big West Conference Championships in Mission Viejo.

While Cal Poly claimed the team title, conference foe Long Beach State claimed the individual title thanks to the efforts of Michael Chen.   The senior from Taipei, Taiwan, completed the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 9-under 201 to collect the individual medalist honors and guide his team to a second place finish.

Inakoshi Makes History For Hawai’i:
Junior Skye Inakoshi became the school’s first individual champion in a full-field event in five years after finishing in a four-way tie for first place at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate.  This marks the first time  a Hawai’i player claimed medalist honors in the 40-year history of its home event.

UC Irvine Gears Up For Home Event:
The UC Irvine men’s team closes out March with the Anteater Invitational, which is a two-day event that runs March 28-29 at the El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel, Calif. (par 72; 7,060 yards).   This year’s event features host UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Utah State, Drexel, North Dakota State, Weber State, Columbia and Brown.

Hawai’i Women Return Home:
The Rainbow Whaine are hosting their second tournament of the year March 22-23 with the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Kane’ohe Klipper Golf Course in Kane’ohe, O’ahu.  Prior to this event Hawai’i entertains Texas in a dual match on March 19.

Leading The Way:
Long Beach State’s Kassidy Teare is the current front-runner on the women’s side with a 72.1 stroke average.  She is followed by Cal State Fullerton’s Martina Edberg, who has carded a 72.8 stroke average over five events this year.  Rounding out the top three is Hawai’i’s Eimi Koga and her 73.1 mark.  All three ladies have captured an individual medalist honor this year.

On the men’s side, Long Beach State owns the top spot with Daniel Chian blasting an impressive 70.1 average.  UC Santa Barbara’s Brandon Bauman narrowly edged out Cal Poly’s Justin De Los Santos for the second spot with a mark of 71.8 over seven events.  De Los Santos sits third at 71.9
