Averaging 19.5 points in two wins, UC Riverside junior Réjane Verin (Les Abymes, Guadeloupe/Junipero Serra HS) earned Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades.
The award continued an amazing string of recognition for the Highlanders this season as Verin claimed her fourth honor. Teammate Brittany Crain has earned the honor five times.
Verin shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) to help the Highlanders improve to 14-0 in Big West play and clinch the outright regular season title.
She poured in 20 points with four rebounds, four assists and a career-high seven steals in UCR’s 84-62 triumph over CSUN on Wednesday.
The 6-1 forward produced 19 points and 11 rebounds in Saturday’s title-clinching 81-77 win over Hawai‘i for her 11th double-double of the season. She made seven of 13 from the field and connected on all five free throw attempts. The double-double was her fifth in the last six games.
Verin played all 40 minutes in both contests.
UCR now focuses on becoming the first team since UC Santa Barbara in 2001-02 to finish the regular season unbeaten in Big West play.
Others nominated: Dynn Leaupepe (Cal Poly); Samantha Logan (Cal State Fullerton); Gigi Hascheff (Long Beach State); Alyson Doherty (UC Davis); Jasmine Ware (UC Santa Barbara); Destiny King (Hawai‘i)
