A battle between conference women's tennis unbeatens UC Santa Barbara and Hawai‘i takes place this weekend in Honolulu.


Women’s Tennis Rivals Set For Clash

The Beach have won 21 straight matches against Big West opposition in regular season action.  It’s a streak that goes back almost three years.  In fact, UCI was the last team to upend LBSU in conference play, occurring on Mar. 2, 2013.

LBSU and UCI have waged many battles over the years, most notably in the Big West Tournament finals where the two met seven straight years from 2008-14.  The Beach is off to a 3-2 start this season, including a win over CSUN in the Big West opener on Feb. 5, and the only two losses coming to nationally ranked Arizona and Arizona State.  The Anteaters are uncharacteristically struggling – 1-5 overall with a five-game losing streak heading into the showdown with their rival

Island Showdown Highlights This Week’s Schedule
The two squads perhaps most poised to unseat LBSU from its dominant position atop Big West women’s tennis are UC Santa Barbara and Hawai‘i.  And now, the two teams meet each other in Honolulu on Friday.

UH is 2-0 in Big West play, having toppled Cal Poly and UC Riverside.  UCSB has a conference win over UC Davis.  The Rainbow Wahine are ranked No. 64 in this week’s Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.  Winners of five straight matches, UH finished off a southern California roadtrip with victories over San Diego State and San Diego.  The Gauchos have won three straight and four of their last five matches.  Both UCSB and UH also look to take down No. 35 Oregon over the weekend while on the islands.

Cal State Fullerton Seeks To Keep Streak Going
Cal State Fullerton head coach Dianne Matias has the program off to its best start in recorded history, going back to 1981.  The Titans are 6-1 heading into matches against Cal State Los Angeles and UC Riverside this week.  In Saturday’s 4-3 nailbiter win at UC Davis, the Titans registered their first win in a Big West opener since 1995.

Men Improve In The National Rankings

UC Santa Barbara vaulted 15 spots in the Oracle/ITA rankings to No. 27 nationally, thanks to a five-game winning streak that includes four wins over top-75 foes.  The Gaucho men knocked off No. 69 Arizona and No. 38 San Diego State last week.  UCSB, 6-3 overall, has faced eight ranked opponents among its first nine matches.  UCSB’s home opener this Saturday takes place against No. 70 Pacific.  Meanwhile, UC Davis achieved a program Division I record No. 49 ranking this week on the strength of a six-match winning streak.  The Aggies are idle until Mar. 3 when they face Villanova at a neutral site match in La Jolla, Calif.
