A third consecutive Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor accompanied the exploits of UC Riverside senior Brittany Crain (Moreno Valley, Calif./John W. North HS), who scored 28 and 33 points in a pair of conference wins.
It was the fifth Player of the Week honor for Crain this season, and the 10th of her career. She is now only one of five players in Big West history to collect 10 or more career awards.
The 5-8 guard continued her scoring onslaught in helping the Highlanders defeat Long Beach State (83-58) at home and UC Davis on the road (90-76). She has scored 20-plus points in nine straight contests, including three of 30 or more.
Crain led five starters in double figures with her 28 points against LBSU on 10-of-18 shooting. She knocked down four three-pointers and added a pair of steals. Against the Aggies, Crain collected a game-high 33 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals. She sank five threes against the Aggies to give her nine for the week.
Crain scored 18 of her 33 in the decisive fourth quarter, hitting four treys and doing the damage while playing with four fouls for most of the period. She has managed her impressive output despite the team having just seven available players the last four games.
In addition to averaging 30.5 points in the two wins, she shot an impressive 51.3% (20-of-39) from the field, including 47.4% (9-of-19) from distance.
UCR is now 12-0 in Big West play, and seeks to become the first team to finish league undefeated since UC Santa Barbara in 2001-02 (16-0).
Others nominated: Beth Balbierz (Cal Poly); Samantha Logan (Cal State Fullerton); Raven Benton (Long Beach State); Makala Roper (UC Santa Barbara); Destiny King (Hawai‘i)
