Crain Earns Ninth Career Player of the Week Award
Senior Brittany Crain (Moreno Valley, Calif./John W. North HS) continued her scoring rampage, establishing a career scoring high to earn another Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week accolade.
It was the second straight, fourth this season and ninth career Player of the Week award for Crain. The nine citations tie the guard for fifth all-time in Big West history alongside Cal State Fullerton’s Genia Miller and UC Santa Barbara’s Lindsay Taylor.
Crain, the Big West’s leading scorer at 21.0 points per game, scored a career-high 39 points to lead the Highlanders past Cal State Fullerton, 90-43, to begin the week. She knocked down a career-best seven three-pointers and shot 15-of-26 overall from the field. Crain also became the school’s all-time leader in three-point field goals amidst the scoring onslaught.
In a 75-62 victory at Cal Poly, Crain toned it down just slightly, pouring in 26 points on 8-of-17 shooting with one triple. She hit nine of her 11 free throw attempts.
With 65 points in the two wins, Crain became UCR’s Division I career record holder in points with 2,111, surpassing Kemie Nkele (2,062, 2004-09) for the distinction. She averaged 32.5 points while shooting 53.5 (23-of-43) percent from the floor and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from behind the arc. She also tallied 14 rebounds in the two wins while helping UCR remain undefeated in Big West games at 10-0.
Others nominated: Beth Balbierz (Cal Poly); Emily Cole (CSUN); Madison Montgomery (Long Beach State); Rachel Nagel (UC Davis); Gnome Jemerigbe (UC Santa Barbara); Megan Huff (Hawai‘i)
