Moreno de Alboran, Valenzuela Receive Tennis Honors


UC Santa Barbara freshman Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Cal State Fullerton junior Alexis Valenzuela garnered the weekly tennis honors for outstanding play in singles that helped their teams to impressive dual match victories.

Moreno de Alboran Upsets Nation's 40th-Ranked Singles Player

A win over the nation’s 40th-ranked singles player helped UC Santa Barbara freshman Nicolas Moreno de Alboran (New York, NY/Ibstock Place School) to Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.

Moreno de Alboran upset No. 40 Paul Oosterbaan of Georgia, 7-5, 6-3, to provide the Gauchos their only point in a 4-1 loss to the sixth-ranked Bulldogs at the ITA Kickoff Weekend.  He then recorded his second consecutive straight set victory, defeating Louisville’s Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff by a 6-4, 6-1 score.  The win aided UCSB’s 4-3 victory over the No. 37 Cardinals.  Both wins came at the No. 3 position.

Valenzuela Plays Key Role In Historic Win For Titans

Cal State Fullerton junior Alexis Valenzuela (West Covina, Calif./West Covina HS) helped the program pull off an historic win in capturing Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.

The No. 1 singles player for the Titans, Valenzuela went 3-0 at the top spot as CSF posted a 2-1 for the week.  Her 6-4, 6-1 win over Kennedy Davis of San Diego State helped the Titans to a 5-2 team win, marking the first time in 30 meetings that they defeated the Aztecs.

Valenzuela teamed with Camille De Leon at No. 1 doubles for a 6-4 win over the Aztec duo of Isabelle Hoorn and Taylor Lederman that ultimately helped CSF secure the doubles point.  Valenzuela went a combined 5-0 in singles and doubles, which also included a 6-3, 6-4 win over Marta Stojanovic of San Diego.
