Hawai‘i freshman Julia Barton (Redhead, New South Wales, Australia/Merewether HS) had a sensational collegiate debut, helping her team to four wins over top-20 teams, and earn the inaugural Big West Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week award for the 2016 season.
The Rainbow Wahine posted a 5-1 record at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational, and Barton scored in all six games while leading the team overall with 12 goals.
Barton’s debut featured a three-goal output against No. 4 Cal in an 11-10 upset victory. The utility player also recorded the game-winning goal in the fourth quarter.
Barton struck for another game-winner two days later in UH’s 7-5 win over No. 8 San Jose State. She finished the match with two goals against the Spartans.
She concluded the tournament with a team-high four goals in a 12-3 victory over CSU Bakersfield. In between, she helped the Rainbow Wahine to victories over No. 12 Michigan and No. 20 Wagner with a goal in each contest, and she scored another goal in a 13-8 setback to No. 2 UCLA.
