Heim, Hruba Collect First Tennis Honors Of 2016 Season

UC Irvine sophomore Sebastian Heim and Hawai‘i freshman Marina Hruba are the first recipients of the Big West Men's and Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week awards for the 2016 season.

Heim Upsets Nation's No. 35-Ranked Player

UC Irvine sophomore Sebastian Heim (Speyer, Germany/Hans-Purrmann-Gymnasium) garnered his fourth career Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week as he began the 2016 season with an upset of the nation’s No. 35-ranked singles player.

Heim’s 6-2, 6-2 victory over Uros Petronijevic of San Diego gave the Anteaters their only point in a 4-1 season-opening loss to the nation’s 22nd-ranked squad.  Heim, who was ranked No. 119 at the time of the match, is UCI’s first ranked singles player since Fabian Matthews in 2011.

Heim also teamed with two different partners to win their matches at No. 3 doubles against San Diego and UC San Diego.

Others nominated: Kyle McCann (UC Riverside); Nathan Eshmade (UC Santa Barbara); Felix Albert (Hawai‘i)

Hruba Makes Immediate Impact In Hawai‘i Lineup

Marina Hruba (Prague, Czech Republic) of Hawai‘i posted a combined 5-1 record in singles and doubles to secure Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.

The freshman made her Rainbow Wahine debut against Theresa Van Zyl of No. 11-ranked Baylor, and came away with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.  She moved up to the No. 3 slot and recorded another straight set victory – 6-0, 6-1 – over Nevada’s Blaga Delic to help UH eke out a 4-3 triumph.

She also knocked off Tami Grende of No. 56-ranked Washington by a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 score to pick up UH’s only point of the contest.  In doubles, she teamed with Paulina Petriskova to win two of their three matches, both wins coming by 6-2 scores.

Others nominated: Cassidy Branstine (UC Irvine)
