Verin Helps Highlanders Stay Perfect In Big West
Earning her third Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award this season, UC Riverside junior Réjane Verin (Les Abymes, Guadeloupe/Junipero Serra HS) was instrumental in two huge road wins.
Verin averaged 22.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists as the Highlanders handled two programs expected to contend for the regular season crown.
In Wednesday’s 78-60 victory against Long Beach State, Verin churned out a career-high 34 points on 14-of-22 shooting. She added 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Verin pumped in 20 points in the first half to stake the Highlanders to a 17-point halftime lead.
The 6-1 forward just missed on a second consecutive double-double, contributing 11 points and nine rebounds to help UCR edge Hawai‘i, 77-74, on Saturday. It was UCR’s first win in eight tries all-time against the Rainbow Wahine. Verin added four assists, two steals and two blocks to help UC Riverside improve to 4-0 in the Big West and extend its winning streak to five overall. She hit two key fourth quarter free throws with 15 ticks remaining to give UCR a 75-71 lead.
For the week, Verin shot 54.5 (18-for-33) percent from the field.
