Crain Helps Highlanders To Solid Big West Start

UC Riverside senior Brittany Crain (Moreno Valley, Calif./John W. North HS) averaged 30.5 points and shot just under 57 percent from the field in a pair of victories, securing her Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors for the seventh time in her career.

The 5-8 guard also helped the Highlanders achieve a couple of historical marks.  Scoring 28 points on 12-of-20 shooting, including four three-pointers, Crain was instrumental in UCR’s 93-69 victory over UC Irvine in Thursday’s Big West opener.  It was the first conference opening win for the Highlanders since the 2008-09 season.  She added six rebounds, a block and a steal to her stat line.

In Saturday’s 83-53 win at UC Santa Barbara, Crain poured in a season-high 33 points as the Highlanders enjoyed their largest margin of victory (+30) in a Big West road win in 10 years.  She made 13 of her 24 floor shots, including a pair of three-pointers, and hit all five of her free throw attempts.  Crain chipped in four rebounds and two assists as UCR began 2-0 in the Big West for the first time since the 2007-08 season.

For the week, Crain shot 56.8 (25-for-44) percent from the field.

Others nominated: Hannah Gilbert (Cal Poly); Dani Craig (Cal State Fullerton); Raven Benton (Long Beach State); Alyson Doherty (UC Davis); Makala Roper (UC Santa Barbara); Ashleigh Karaitiana (Hawai’i)
