Taylor, Petrachi, Hubbell Earn Women's Volleyball Honors

11/16/2015

Nikki Taylor of Hawai‘i, Emilia Petrachi of UC Santa Barbara, and Maddie Hubbell of UC Riverside earned this week’s women’s volleyball top honors.

Taylor Helps Rainbow Wahine To Share Of Big West Title

Hawai‘i junior Nikki Taylor (Honolulu, O’ahu/Kaiser HS) captured Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honors with a 21-kill performance that helped her squad clinch at least a share of the conference title.

Taylor’s 21 kills came on 52 swings in a 3-1 victory at UC Davis on Sunday.  She added nine digs to just miss out on recording her sixth double-double of the year.

She also contributed five blocks, including one solo.  Taylor reached the 20-kill plateau for the sixth time this season, and the second match in the last three.

Hawai‘i improved to 23-1 overall and 13-0 in Big West play, and can clinch the title outright on Tuesday at UC Irvine.

Others nominated: Raeann Greisen (Cal Poly); Nele Barber (Long Beach State); Helena Peric (UC Riverside)

Petrachi Nabs Second Freshman Honor

Posting back-to-back 20-plus dig performances, UC Santa Barbara defensive specialist Emilia Petrachi (Modena, Italy/Liceo Classico San Carlo) notched Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.

The defensive dynamo averaged 6.86 scoops per set as the Gauchos split a pair of conference matches.

In a four-set victory at Cal State Fullerton, Petrachi gobbled up 26 digs to tie for her second-highest single-match total, and her presence helped limit the Titans to a .187 hitting percentage.  Petrachi also provided some offense with a season-high tying two service aces.

Despite a 3-0 loss at UC Riverside, the Gauchos got a 22-dig performance from Petrachi, who tallied 20 or more digs for the ninth occasion this season.  She is one of just three Big West players to surpass the 400-dig milestone this year, finishing the weekend with 407.  Petrachi ranks second in the Big West with a 4.73 dig average.

Others nominated: Adlee Van Winden (Cal Poly); Peyton Grahovac (Long Beach State); Chelsea Doyle (UC Riverside)

Hubbell Gathers Top Defender Honor

UC Riverside junior libero Maddie Hubbell (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty HS), the conference’s digs leader, had a career-best effort to earn Big West Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Hubbell tallied a career-high 28 digs in a straight set win over UC Santa Barbara, helping the Highlanders break the program record for Big West wins in a season (5).

She also had 12 digs in UCR’s three-set defeat to Cal Poly.

Hubbell leads the conference in total digs (488) and digs per set (4.93).
