The women’s volleyball weekly honorees featured UC Riverside senior Helena Peric, Cal Poly freshman Adlee Van Winden and UC Davis freshman Malia Bolko.

Peric Leads Highlanders To Conference Sweep

UC Riverside senior Helena Peric (Smederevo, Serbia/Zemunska Gimnazija HS) garnered Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honors after tallying a career-high in kills and leading her team a sweep of CSUN and Cal State Fullerton in conference play.

The 6-1 outside hitter averaged 4.75 kills and 2.25 digs per set while hitting .333 (38-11-81) in the two victories.  She guided the Highlanders to back-to-back Big West wins for just the fifth time in program history.  In addition, the win over Fullerton gave the Highlanders four conference victories on the season, tying the program record for Big West wins.

Peric established her career-high in kills with 23 in a five-set battle against CSUN.  She hit .308 for that match, adding 12 digs for her second double-double of the season.

She collected 15 kills on .379 hitting against the Titans, committing just four errors in 29 attempts.  Peric chipped in six digs and two service aces as the Highlanders captured their ninth win of the season, the most for the program since the 2005 campaign.

Others nominated: Taylor Nelson (Cal Poly); Nele Barber (Long Beach State); Kaylin Squyres (UC Davis); Shelley Anderson (UC Irvine); Olivia Magill (Hawai‘i)

Van Winden Wins Freshman Award For Seventh Time

Cal Poly outside hitter Adlee Van Winden (Napa, Calif./Vintage HS) improved upon her record number of Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week awards with her seventh following a Mustang split against UC Irvine and UC Davis.

As she has all season, Van Winden led the Mustangs offensively with back-to-back 22-kill efforts.  She reached 22 kills in the five-set win over the Anteaters on 64 swings, hitting .250 for the match.  She scooped up nine balls with two block assists and a service ace to add to the cause.

In a five-set loss to the Aggies, Van Winden posted her seventh 20-kill match of the season, turning in nearly an identical line as she had one additional error.  She contributed 13 digs to secure her seventh double-double of the year.

Van Winden averaged 4.40 kills and 2.20 digs per set as the Mustangs moved to 9-3 in league play.  She ranks third in the Big West with 4.02 kills per set.

Others nominated: Peyton Grahovac (Long Beach State); Kelechi Ohiri (UC Davis); Chelsea Doyle (UC Riverside)

Bolko Nearly Misses Career-High Dig Effort

UC Davis freshman Malia Bolko (Benicia, Calif./St. Patrick-St. Vincent HS) earned her second Big West Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week honor this season after serving as key protector on the backline in a pair of Aggie victories.

The 5-8 libero/defensive specialist averaged 5.25 digs per set as the Aggies swept UC Santa Barbara and took out Cal Poly in five sets on the road.

Bolko noted 27 digs in Saturday’s win over the Mustangs, missing her career high by one.  She also helped UC Davis tally its highest single-match dig total (90) in almost exactly two years.  She had 15 digs against the Gauchos.

Bolko, who has recorded double-digit digs in eight straight matches and 11 of the last 12, also showed off her passing prowess with no aces allowed after going 51 of 51 in serves received.
