Barrio, Fuertes Earn Women's Soccer Weekly Honors
Blanca Barrio and Sydney Fuertes came up big for their teams in garnering the women’s soccer weekly awards.
Barrio’s Goals Knock Off Previous Unbeaten Long Beach State
UC Riverside junior Blanca Barrio (San Bernardino, Calif./Citrus HS) provided both goals in a 2-1 victory over previous conference unbeaten Long Beach State, capturing Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Dealing with a 49er squad that had started Big West play 3-0 with three shutouts, the Highlanders turned to Barrio to end that streak. She scored in the 22nd minute after depositing a shot just outside the LBSU defensive 18.
Barrio extended the lead to 2-0 with the game-winner at the 48:03 mark when she unloaded on a 25-yard shot that sailed over the LBSU goalkeeper and under the cross bar.
Those were the fourth and fifth goals of the year for Barrio. She leads the Highlanders with 16 points.
