Vaziri, Cross Named Cross Country Athletes of the Week
UC Santa Barbara senior Shyan Vaziri and Hawai‘i junior Alli Cross each took on team leadership roles in earning the Big West Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week awards.
Vaziri Takes No. 1 Scoring Slot For Gauchos
The top finisher for his team for the first time in his career, UC Santa Barbara senior Shyan Vaziri (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) collected Big West Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors for his performance at the Notre Dame Invitational.
Competing in the “Blue” division race, Vaziri completed the five mile course in 24:46.0, averaging 4:57.2 mile splits. He came in 58th place out of 167 runners.
Vaziri helped the Gauchos to a 17th-place team finish in a loaded field that included five squads ranked in the NCAA’s top-30. UCSB outscored No. 18 Arizona State while competing without reigning Big West champion Bryan Guijarro.
Others nominated: Jordy Ceja (UC Davis)
Cross Performs Well Against Tough Field
Junior Alli Cross (Tualatin, Ore./Lane CC) led Hawai‘i at the Sacramento Capital Cross Challenge, posting a top-20 finish to garner Big West Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.
Making her first bid for the team leader role, Cross excelled against a tough 11-team field. She crossed the 5K finish line in 17:44.7 that represented a lifetime-best time, and the fastest time by a UH runner since Ashley Aitken in 2010.
Cross placed 18th overall individually while pacing the Rainbow Wahine to a sixth-place finish, ahead of Big West counterpart UC Davis.
Cross also lowered her previous 2015 best time by just under one and a half minutes as she led the UH pack for the first time.
Others nominated: Emily Taylor (Cal State Fullerton)
