UC Davis Duo Joins POW Regular Van Winden On Awards List


UC Davis teammates Kaylin Squyres and Malia Bolko captured their first women’s volleyball weekly honors for 2015, while Cal Poly outside hitter Adlee Van Winden was recognized for the fourth time this season.

Squyres Leads Aggies To Conference Weekend Sweep

UC Davis senior Kaylin Squyres (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney HS) averaged 6.13 kills per set in two Aggie victories to garner Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honors.

The 6-1 outside hitter led the Aggies in kills and total attempts in each of the two, four-set conference wins over UC Riverside and UC Irvine.

Squyres recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 24 kills and 13 digs against the Highlanders.  She hit .262 for the match while adding a pair of aces.

In the Anteater match, Squyres picked up her game in the final two sets after her team found itself down 1-0 in the match.  She hit 8-1-17 (.412) in the third set and 9-0-16 (.562) in the fourth to lead the comeback.  Squyres hit at a .306 (25-6-62) clip for the match and also chipped in eight digs.

Her 25 kills against UCI lifted her career total to 1,023, making her the ninth player in school history to surpass the 1,000-kill milestone.  She has now totaled 77 kills (6.42 per set) over the last three contests.

Van Winden Claims Fourth Freshman Honor

Cal Poly outside hitter Adlee Van Winden (Napa, Calif./Vintage HS) continued her impressive inaugural season as she earned her fourth selection as the Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week.

Van Winden was instrumental in a pair of Cal Poly victories.  She averaged 4.71 kills and 2.29 digs per set while hitting .338 (33-6-80) for the week.

In Friday’s four-set victory over No. 24 Long Beach State, Van Winden tallied a career-high 21 kills on .321 hitting to go along with nine digs and a service ace.

Van Winden followed with 12 kills on 27 swings (.370) and seven digs in a sweep of CSUN, which handed the Matadors their first conference loss.  She has collected double-digit kills in 13 of her first 14 collegiate matches, and her 3.94 kills per set this season ranks her third in the Big West.

Bolko Leads UC Davis In Digs In Two Wins

UC Davis libero Malia Bolko (Benicia, Calif./St. Patrick-St. Vincent HS) collected her first career Big West Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week award after topping the team in digs in conference wins over UC Riverside and UC Irvine.

Bolko had 25 digs against the Highlanders to secure her sixth 20-dig match of the year.  She had 17 digs versus the Anteaters.  She also allowed just one ace in each of the two matches as a primary passer, finishing the weekend with a .959 receive average.
