Gonzales, Smith Capture Women's Soccer Weekly Honors

A game-winning goal in overtime and two shutouts aided the selections of Ashley Gonzales and Alexis Smith for this week’s women’s soccer awards.

Gonzales Puts Home Golden Goal

Long Beach State sophomore Ashley Gonzales (Ontario, Calif./Chino Hills HS) buried the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the first overtime to give her team the win over defending conference champion Cal State Fullerton, earning her Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week accolades for the third time in her career.

Gonzales beat the keeper to the far post at the 92:25 mark on a one-touch shot to give the 49ers a 1-0 victory over the Titans, avenging last year’s loss in the Big West Tournament finals and snapping CSF’s 12-game unbeaten streak versus conference opponents.

The forward was a menace all night to the CSF backline, registering a career-high eight of LBSU’s 16 total shots.  For Gonzales, it was her team-leading fifth goal, and fourth game-winner, of the season.

Gonzales now has 14 career strikes, putting her two shy from entering the 49er all-time top-10.

Others nominated: Caitlyn Kreutz (Cal Poly); Haley Hughes (UC Davis); Claudia Lopez (UC Irvine); Mallory Hromatko (UC Santa Barbara)

Smith Extends Scoreless Streak

Goalkeeper Alexis Smith (San Jose, Calif./Tennessee) helped UC Davis earn four important points in the conference standings with her stellar play between the pipes, and received her first career Big West Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week nod for her efforts.

The redshirt freshman did not allow a goal in 217 minutes and 30 seconds of action last week as the Aggies won their Big West opener, 1-0, over Cal Poly, and battled CSUN to a scoreless draw.

Smith made a combined six stops in the two games to preserve her scoreless streak, which now stands at 417:30.  She saved four shots in the win over the Mustangs, and helped UC Davis win its second Big West home opener in its Division I era.

The two shutouts represented the eighth and ninth of the year for Smith, a new single-season school record.  Her nine clean sheets are three more than the next Big West goalkeeper in the rankings.  Smith also lowered her league-low goals against average to 0.43.

Others nominated: Robin Mertens (Cal Poly); Cynthia Tafoya (CSUN); Melanie Fox (Long Beach State); Haley O’Brien (UC Irvine); Jacq Caginia (UC Santa Barbara)
