Sanchez, Fox Garner Women's Soccer Weekly Honors
CSUN sophomore Cynthia Sanchez and Long Beach State senior Melanie Fox emerged as this week’s women’s soccer award recipients.
Sanchez Continues Goal Scoring Flurry
CSUN sophomore Cynthia Sanchez (Gilroy, Calif./Gilroy HS) netted three goals in two wins to claim Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The forward has now scored at least one goal in five straight matches.
Sanchez notched a brace in a 2-1 victory at Fresno State Friday and deposited her second game-winning goal of the weekend, connecting on the first goal in a 3-0 triumph versus Detroit. Her goal against the Titans came in the second minute.
Sanchez’s six goals already have set a career-high.
Others nominated: Caitlyn Kruetz (Cal Poly); Rebecca Wilson (Cal State Fullerton); Rachel Smith (UC Davis); Tatyana Garrett (UC Irvine); Alexa Bustamante (UC Riverside); Mallory Hromatko (UC Santa Barbara)
Fox Nets Hat Trick
Long Beach State senior Melanie Fox (Valencia, Calif./West Ranch HS) captured Big West Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors with an all-around effort.
She started at center back in both matches, playing 177 minutes, and led the charge as the 49ers posted a pair of shutouts in a scoreless draw against San Diego and a 6-0 whitewashing of Portland State.
Fox anchored a strong 49er defensive effort as the Toreros were held to just nine shots on their home field.
Portland State was limited to just four shots, but it was Fox’s offense that took center stage in the victory. She scored on three second-half set pieces (52’, 60’, 90’) to secure the first 49er hat trick since two-time Big West Offensive Player of the Year Nadia Link did it in 2012. Fox converted a header on a corner kick for the first goal, put home another header on a free kick for the second, and scored with 36 seconds left in the game to complete the hat trick.
Fox has helped LBSU post three consecutive shutouts (fourth this year) and the team’s season goals against average now stands at 0.31.
