Burkenroad, McKeown Collect Women's Soccer Honors

Game-winning plays, a 2-0 start, and an upset win over the nation’s No. 4-ranked squad led to weekly women’s soccer honors for Cal State Fullerton senior Christina Burkenroad and Long Beach State junior Ashton McKeown.

Burkenroad’s Monster Week Helps Produce Two Titan Victories

Cal State Fullerton senior Christina Burkenroad (San Diego, Calif./Mission Bay HS) garnered Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors for her role in season-opening victories over Liberty and George Washington.

The midfielder collected three goals and one assist over the weekend.  She netted her sixth career game-winning goal in Friday’s 1-0 shutout of Liberty in the opener of the Fullerton Tournament.  Burkenroad hammered home a cross to the back post in the 85th minute to secure the win.

Against the Colonials, Burkenroad notched the opening goal of the match, assisted on what turned out to be the game-winning strike, and provided a late insurance goal as the Titans breezed to a 4-1 victory.

Five of the six shots she took over the games were on target, and her performance helped Cal State Fullerton start a season 2-0 for the first time since 2008.

Others nominated: Megan Abutin (Cal Poly); Destinney Duron (CSUN); Ashley Gonzales (Long Beach State); Blanca Barrio (UC Riverside)

McKeown Records Shutout In Upset Win Over No. 4 UCLA

Long Beach State junior Ashton McKeown (Huntington Beach, CA) captured the Big West Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week award as the netminder helped blank No. 4 UCLA.

The 1-0 victory represented the highest-ranked opponent LBSU has beaten in program history.  McKeown stopped three shots to secure her 10th career shutout in front of a record crowd of 2,232 at George Allen Field.

McKeown, the 2014 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year, returned on Sunday to handcuff Auburn for 90 minutes of regulation and one overtime period.  The Tigers, which had received votes in the preseason polls, snuck in a loose ball in traffic from six yards out to hand LBSU a 1-0 defeat at the 101:22 mark.  But McKeown still made three saves and finished the weekend with a sparkling 0.47 goals against average and .857 save percentage.

Others nominated: Alyssa Giannetti (Cal Poly); Morgan Batcheller (Cal State Fullerton); Jovani McCaskill (CSUN)
