Big West Golf Release - Final

UC Davis Women Collects Sixth Straight Conference Title:
After firing a final round score of 289, for a three-day total of 858,  the UC Davis women’s golf team collected its sixth straight Big West Women’s Golf Championship at the El Macero Country Club. The Aggies’ streak of six straight titles is the second-longest stretch of victories in the Big West after San Jose State, who owns the top spot after winning 10-straight championships from 1987-1996.
The Aggies, who placed four players in the top five of the leaderboard, led the entire tournament and finished with a 29-stroke lead over second place Hawai’i, who tallied 887.  UC Riverside and Long Beach State tied for third after carding 906 while Cal Poly posted a 914 point total to finish fifth.  The Titans of Cal State Fullerton were three strokes back in sixth and UC Irvine posted a total of 926 for seventh place.  Rounding out the eight-team field was CSUN with a score of 939.

UC Davis’ Andrea Wong distanced herself from the rest of the pack in the final round of competition, shooting 69 for a three-round score of 208 to capture individual medalist honors.

UC Irvine Captures Men’s Golf Team Title:
UC Irvine battled its way to the top of the leaderboard after carding a low-round score of 285 during the final round of the 2015 Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship to claim its first conference title since 2010.  This marks the third team title for the Anteaters this season after picking up wins at the Del Walker Intercollegiate and Cal Poly Match Play.

Playing at the San Luis Obispo Country Club, the Anteaters finished one stroke ahead of top-seeded UC Davis with a three-round score of 860.  UC Riverside followed in third place with 871, while Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara finished tied for fourth with a 875 point total.  Cal Poly registered 876 to grab sixth place and CSUN landed in the seventh spot with a score of 899.  Cal State Fullerton was eighth at 901 with Hawai’i rounding out the nine-team field with a total of 922.
Home field advantage may of played a part on the individual side as Cal Poly’s Justin De Los Santos earned individual medalist honors after firing a 2-over 212 over the course of the three-day event.  He becomes the first Mustang to garner the individual conference title since Travis Bertoni did so in 2005.

Big West Awards:
Luke Vivolo secured UC Davis’ first Big West Men’s Golf Player of the Year, while Zach Smith picked up UC Santa Barbara’s first Big West Men’s Golf Freshman of the Year.  UC Irvine Head Coach Paul Smolinski walked away with Big West Men’s Golf Coach of the Year for the first time since 2010. On the women’s side, Aggie Paige Lee earned the 2015 Big West Women’s Golf Player of the Year accolade and the 49ers’ Savannah Knox received the 2015 Big West Women’s Golf Freshman of the Year award.  UC Davis Head Coach Anna Temple was named Big West Women’s Golf Coach of the Year for the third straight year.

UC Davis’ Lee Named To WGCA All-America Team:
Paige Lee, who helped lead UC Davis to its best-ever finish while being named the Big West Women’s Golfer of the Year, has been named 2014-15 All-America honorable mention by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association, it was announced by the organization.  Lee, a sophomore from nearby Folsom, Calif., is the program’s third all-time All-American. She joins Demi Runas who was a second-team selection for the 2012-13 season and Alice Kim who was named honorable mention for 2008-09.

NCAA Women’s Tournament:
UC Davis battled deep into the fourth round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships on Monday but finished just shy of advancing to the match play quarterfinals at The Concession Golf Club. The 22nd-ranked Aggies, who were in their fourth NCAA Finals in the past eight seasons, finished in 11th place at 68 over and just six shots out of a top-eight finish which would’ve advanced them into Tuesday’s match play. It was the program’s best-ever finish at the national championship.  The Big West also received three individual at-large selections in Cal State Fullerton’s Martina Edberg, UC Riverside’s Savannah Vilaubi and Long Beach State’s Kassidy Teare, but none advanced past Regional play.

NCAA Men’s Tournament:
Big West men’s golf champion UC Irvine was joined by the UC Davis Aggies, who received an at-large berth, and Cal Poly’s Justin De Los Santos, the lone individual at-large selection.  The Aggies tied for ninth at the Bremerton Regional and the Anteaters finished 10th at the Lubbock Regional.  De Los Santos, one of 10 individuals who competed at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., struggled in the final round of the NCAA San Diego Regional and as a result, he slipped from 19th to a tie for 61st where he would conclude the event.
