Paige Lee was 2 over after 16 holes and the UC Davis women's golf team was in 14th place when play was suspended on Friday evening during the first round of the NCAA Championships at The Concession Golf Club.

Lightning suspended play for nearly an hour during the afternoon before halting it again in the early evening. Half of the 24-team tournament field -- including 22nd-ranked UC Davis -- was still on the course when play was halted shortly after the second stoppage. First-round play will continue Saturday at 5:30 a.m. (PDT) with the second round scheduled for 30 minutes later.

The Aggies were 19 over when play was suspended. UC Davis is two shots behind No. 19 UNLV. Ten teams are within seven shots of each other between 10th and 19th place.

Senior Beverly Vatananugulkit and junior Betty Chen each finished with rounds of 6-over 78 while Lee was 2 over with two holes remaining. Junior Andrea Wong was 5 over with one hole left and senior Blair Lewis was 8 over with two to go.

No teams were under par when play was stopped. Stanford, ranked 13th, is in the lead at 3 over but all five of its players still had at least four holes left. Duke, which was in the morning wave of teams on the course completed its round at 5 over and is in second. Only six players in the 132-player field were under par.

"The Concession Golf Club is a fabulous course," said Aggie head coach Anna Temple who has led her team to two NCAA Finals appearances in the past three seasons. "It is very challenging and rewards consistent and smart play. Everyone on the team has done a good job of staying in the moment and being in control of their emotional responses.

"It takes all five players to have a good round and I'm very pleased that everyone is competing as best as they can," she added. "Tomorrow will be great as we finish the first round and then get some shots back in the second."

Lee has helped lead the way for UC Davis in the first round, collecting 12 pars, a birdie and just three bogeys through her first 16 holes. She was 2 over at her turn but later used a birdie on the par-4 12th hole to help her get back to 2 over after a bogey on the 11th. She has a run of four straight pars heading to the 17th on Saturday morning.

Wong was 6 over after 11 holes but birdied the par-4 15th and was even on the back nine after 17 holes. Vatananugulkit opened with a birdie on the par-4 1st hole and was later just 1 over on her back nine. Chen was just 2 over on the back as she matched Vatananugulkit with a 78. Lewis made her turn 6 over but was just 2 over after that as she prepares to finish her first round.

Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford is 4 under with six holes to go in her opening round while Emma Talley of Alabama is 3 under after 15 holes.
