Big West Golf Release - NCAA Championships

The UC Davis women’s golf program tied its best-ever regional showing at the NCAA South Bend Regional at Warren Golf Course May 7-9, finishing third with a 7-over 295 to advance to the NCAA Championships.   The Aggies’ top-six finish qualified them for the NCAA Championships at Concession Golf Club May 22-27 in Bradenton, Fla.

Blair Lewis led the Aggies in regional play, closing out the regional with an even-par 72 to tie for fifth on the leaderboard with a three-round score of 1-over 217.  Paige Lee tied for 14th after tallying 220 while Andrea Wong is knotted in 21st place with a 222 point total.  Bev Vatananugulkit landed in a tie for the 41st spot with 227 and Betty Chen rounded out the five-person team with a score of 234.

UC Davis earned a spot in the NCAA Regionals after capturing its sixth straight Big West Conference women’s golf championship.  The Aggies, who placed four players in the top five of the leaderboard, led the entire tournament and finished with a 29-stroke lead over second place Hawai’i, who tallied 887.  Aggie Andrea Wong distanced herself from the rest of the pack in the final round of competition, shooting 69 for a three-round score of 208 to capture individual medalist honors.

This is the fourth NCAA Championship appearance for the Aggies since becoming Division I eight years ago, having participated in the finals back  in 2008, 2011 and 2013. The Aggies were a program-best 16th in 2013 at the University of Georgia.

This year’s championship features a format change. All 24 teams and 12 individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play, and then the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams then compete in match play for the championship.

The Golf Channel will provide live coverage of the final three days.

Admission to the NCAA Championships is $15 per day.
