UCD, UCI Conclude Day One Of NCAA Men's Golf Regional

UC Davis ranks seventh and UC Irvine is tied for 11th after day one of the NCAA DI Men’s Golf Regionals.

Making its 13th appearance in the NCAA Regionals, the 2015 Big West Champion Anteaters currently sit tied for 11th with Georgia State at Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas, with a  first round score of 287.  Texas leads at 11-under par 273, Houston is second at 10-under 274 and Duke is third with an 8-under 276.  Host Texas Tech is in fourth at 278 while Purdue and California are tied for fifth place at 279.

Pete Fernandez paced UC Irvine and sits tied for 21st after carding a one-under 70.  He is followed by Jacob Schulze and Bryan Shin, who are knotted in 42nd with a score of 72.  Jonathan Young tallied 73 and is in a five-way tie for 56th while David Kim rounds out the five-man team tied for 61st with a 74 point total.  The Anteaters are paired with Charleston Southern and Georgia State for Friday’s second round beginning at 6:55 a.m. (PT) off the 10th tee.

Fueled by Luke Vivolo’s 2-under 70 to tie for eighth place, UC Davis owns the seventh spot with a one-over 289 on the 7,115-yard Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club.  Participating in their second straight regional as an at-large selection, the Aggies sit just two shots behind fourth-place Iowa (287) and Washington (287).  South Carolina (288) is just a shot in front of UC Davis while Michigan (292) and Pepperdine (292) are two behind. The top five teams after Saturday’s final round will advance to the NCAA Finals.

Patrick Soli concluded day one second on the team and 14th overall after firing a 1-under 71.  Ryan Han shot 1-over 73 to tie for 32nd and Mike Brockington carded 75 and is tied for 40th.  Matt Seramin is tied for 70th after finishing with an 81.

UC Davis starts round two on the 10th hole when it tees off beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Friday. The Aggies are slated to play with Michigan and Pepperdine, the two teams right behind them on the leaderboard.

Cal Poly’s Justin De Los Santos, one of 10 individuals competing at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., carded an opening-round 75.  De Los Santos, the 2015 Big West Conference individual champion, carded three birdies, four bogeys and one double-bogey on the day.  He enters Friday’s second round in a tie for 32nd place among the 75 golfers in the field and tees off at 10:12 a.m.

Six 54-hole regional tournaments are being conducted May 14-16.  The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.

The finals will be conducted May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida. South Florida is the host institution for the 2015 championships.
