Final Warmups Serve As Prelude To Big West Championships

Track and Field Release No. 6

The adidas/Steve Scott Invitational, CSUN Challenge and rivalry duals take up this week's track and field landscape before the transition to the 2015 Big West Track and Field Championships at UC Riverside.

Final Tuneup Ahead In Advance Of Big West Multis: With the 2015 Big West Track and Field Championship Multi Events competition looming, all nine conference schools are in action this week in hopes of qualifying for the Big West meet or improving upon their regional standing.

UC Irvine is hosting the 21st annual adidas/Steve Scott Invitational at Anteater Stadium this weekend.  The meet, named for Steve Scott, a three-time Olympian and six-time All-American in track and cross country at UCI, also features Big West brethren Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, UC Riverside and Hawai‘i.  CSUN is also hosting a meet, the CSUN Challenge, which includes Cal State Fullerton, Fresno State and UC Riverside.

Other action includes UC Davis and UC Riverside sending representatives up to Stanford to compete in the Payton Jordan Invitational.  Rivalry duals are on tap as Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara battle in their annual get together at Westmont College.  A total of 10 Big West Conference event leaders will be in attendance between the two teams.  In addition, UC Davis will send a full lineup up against its neighbors from the north, Sacramento State, in the Causeway Dual.

Long Beach State Men Ranked Third In West Region: One of the top teams in the West Region belongs to Long Beach State, according to the April 27 regional rankings released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.  The 49ers are ranked No. 6 with 441.58 points, ahead of Pac-12 programs such as Arizona State, Washington and Stanford.  They trail fifth-ranked Arizona (442.71) by a miniscule margin.  UC Santa Barbara (No. 12), UC Riverside (No. 14) and Cal Poly (No. 15) also represent the Big West in the region.

UC Riverside Women Top Ranked Big West Team In West Region: The April 27 USTFCCCA rankings tabbed UC Riverside as the Big West’s highest ranked women’s squad in the West Region.  The Highlanders are ranked No. 10, while UC Davis is No. 11.

National Marks Posted By Big West Athletes:The latest TFRRS rankings show several Big West representatives have turned in performances worthy of top 25 national rankings.  UC Davis senior sprinter Ashley Marshall is the highest ranked Big West athlete – men or women – in any event.  She posted a time of 11.22 at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 16 that ranks No. 5 nationally.  A handful of seniors rank just outside the top 10 after delivering impressive efforts earlier this season.  Long Beach State’s Chris Low and Raquel Lambdin of UC Davis share the No. 11 ranking in the country in the 800-meters.  Low ran 1:47.56 at the Stanford Invitational on April 3, while Lambdin posted a 2:04.96 on April 16 at the Mt. SAC Relays.  UC Riverside’s Seth Totten traversed the 5,000-meters in a time of 13:51.20 on April 3 at the Stanford Invitational.  In all, 17 athletes are ranked top 25 in 18 different events.  In addition to her top five mark from the 100 at the Mt. SAC, Marshall followed up with the nation’s 14th-best time in the 200 (23.18) at the same meet.
