Track And Field Awards Spread Out Evenly

Four schools were represented in this edition of the Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards.

UC Irvine sophomore Lloyd Sicard (Gardena, Calif./Serra HS) collected Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors.  Sicard won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.95 at the UCI Spring Break Invitational Saturday.  His time currently ranks No. 5 in the nation and tops the Big West Conference.  That effort in the 110 hurdles improved on his No. 3 time in UCI history.  He was a double-winner at the meet with a 400-meter hurdles winning time of 52.56, which ranks No. 2 in the Big West this season.

UC Riverside senior Raquel Hefflin (Compton, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) excelled at the Arizona State Baldy Castillo Invitational to capture her second consecutive Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week award.  She sported two top-five finishes at the event, including a fourth-place showing in the 800-meter run.  Hefflin crossed the line in 2:09.28 as she finished fourth overall and third among collegians.  The time also is the best mark in the Big West this season.  The conference’s top performer in the 1,500-meters as well, Hefflin legged out a second place finish (first among collegians) at the Baldy Castillo Invitational with a time of 4:25.62.  Nationally, Hefflin ranks fourth in the 800m and seventh in the 1,500m.

A big leap at the USC Trojan Invitational netted Long Beach State senior Ryan Sanders (West Covina, Calif./Mt. SAC) the Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week award.  He notched first place in the triple jump with a mark of 51-09.25 (+3.1w).  At the same competition, he leaped 51-01.50 (+1.5) wind legal.  He currently ranks No. 2 in the NCAA with either mark.  Sanders posted a lifetime-best in the triple jump, and in the process, exceeded the 2014 NCAA Regional qualifying cut-off by over two feet.  He owns the Big West Conference’s top triple jump mark by two feet.

Cal State Fullerton thrower Jessica Flores (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) obliterated a personal-best record and established a new school standard in the hammer throw thanks to her performance at the UNLV Spring Invite, notching her Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week kudos.  She had a heave of 196-05 (59.88m) that not only set the Titan school record, but exceeded her previous PR throw by over 22 feet.  She won the competition with that effort, and stands first in the Big West, seventh in the NCAA West Region and 10th nationally.
