Several Big West track and field teams are in action at various sites in-state and out-of-state this weekend.
BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
Track And Field Schedule Features Busy Week Ahead: Big West teams are scattered all throughout at various meets this week. CSUN is hosting the Northridge Invitational Multis while UC Irvine welcomes fellow conference cohorts UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara to the UCI Spring Break Invitational. Hawai‘i is visiting the mainland to participate in the USC Trojan Invitational, which also includes Long Beach State. Meanwhile, a couple of squads are traveling outside of their home state for competition. Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis head to the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, while UC Riverside is sending a contingent to the ASU Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
Long Beach State Features Five National Leaders: The Long Beach State men’s track and field team, the two-time defending Big West champions, is enjoying a stellar start to the 2015 outdoor season. Five athletes have put forth performances that currently rank No. 1 nationally – Cameron Glasgow in the 200m (21.18), Chris Low in the 800m (1:48.83), Ryan Sanders in the triple jump (51-03) and Jacob Fraser in the shot put (59-03). In addition, the men’s 4x400 relay team also ranks first nationally with a time of 3:13.10.
Aggie Women Rounding Into Form: The UC Davis women are hoping to expand upon a streak of three consecutive Big West championships and appear to have the depth to do just that in 2015. Hosting its own Aggie Open last weekend, UC Davis recorded first-place finishes from Ashley Marshall in the 100 (11.83), Rianna Goins in the 800 (2:12.36), Hannah Kirkegaard in the 5,000, Emma Redick in the 400 hurdles (1:01.14), Erika Barr in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (6:42.58), Catherine Li in the triple jump (40-00.50), Veronica Smart in the shot put (45-7.25) and Breanna Standifer in the discus (151-00).
UC Riverside Women Earn Victories At Double Dual: UC Riverside’s women earned wins over Big West foes Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara at the Double Dual last weekend. The Highlanders displayed their veteran talent with Raquel Hefflin winning in the 1,500m (4:24.80), Danielle Littleton taking the 100 hurdles (13.77) and Faith Makau placing first in the 800m (2:12.26).
Devaney Breaks Anteater School Record: UC Irvine junior Bridget Devaney wiped out her own school record in the Anteater 4-Way meet against Long Beach State, Army and Cerritos College last weekend. Devaney, who set the record last year in the discus with a toss of 168-00, eclipsed that mark with a throw of 171-02.
Big West Track & Field Championship Heads To Riverside: UC Riverside will host the Big West Track and Field Championships for the first time in school history. The UCR Track Stadium will be home to the multi-events portion of the meet (May 8-9) and the full portion (May 15-16).
