First Place Finishes Highlight Track And Field Weekly Awards
All four winners of the Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards turned in first place performances at respective meets.
UC Davis sophomore Alex Grigoriev (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS) earned the Big West Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week award after finishing first in the 800m with a time of 1:50.41 at the Aggie Open. The time ranks third in NCAA Division I, third in the West Region and second in the Big West. Grigoriev’s time is just off his PR of 1:50.33 set at the Cal Opener in 2014.
UC Riverside senior Raquel Hefflin (Compton, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) notched Big West Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors as she set a meet record at the Double Dual against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. Hefflin won the 1,500m with a time of 4:24.80, a mark that bests her nearest competition in the Big West by more than three seconds.
A lifetime-best performance by Long Beach State senior Jake Fraser (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro HS) earned him the Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honor. At the UC Irvine 4-Way Meet, Fraser heaved the shot put 59-03 (18.06m) to finish in first place. In addition to setting a personal-best by seven and one-half inches, the performance ranked No. 6 on the LBSU all-time best marks list. It also currently ranks as No. 1 in the NCAA. Fraser competed among a group that produced the top three marks thus far outdoors in the shot put. He also reeled off another first place showing in the discus, tossing 187-06 (57.21).
The Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor went to UC Riverside senior Danielle Littleton (Oceanside, Calif./Vista HS). She won twice at the UCR Double Dual against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. In the long jump, she posted a mark of 19-10.25 (6.05m). She ran the 100m hurdles in 13.77. Both efforts broke meet records, and represent best marks in the Big West this season.
