BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

CSUN, Long Beach State Still Perfect Atop Big West

CSUN and Long Beach State moved to 3-0 in the Big West women’s tennis standings last week.  The Matadors earned their second straight 4-3 victory as they outlasted Cal State Fullerton, while the 49ers rolled to a 6-1 win against visiting Cal Poly.  Both teams are in action again this week with road tilts – CSUN travels to Cal Poly and LBSU heads to northern California to tackle UC Davis.  The two programs also own the only remaining undefeated records on either the men’s or women’s side.  LBSU is 6-0 overall while CSUN is 5-0.  The 49ers receive an additional road challenge when they visit Sacramento State on Friday.

Two Rise In Men’s Rankings, Cal Poly Makes Three

UC Irvine and UC Davis climbed up the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, while a third men’s team, Cal Poly, made its introduction to the top 75 poll this week.  The Anteaters, which nearly knocked of No. 48 Pepperdine last week, moved up 15 slots to No. 60 in the poll.  After winning eight of their last nine matches, the Aggies earned a program record No. 64 ranking, up from being tied for 70th last week.  Cal Poly, which has emerged victorious in four of its last five contests, broke into the poll at No. 71.

Four Women’s Teams Ranked In ITA Poll

The overall strength of Big West women’s tennis is on display as four schools are included in this week’s ITA rankings.  Long Beach State leads the parade at No. 46, while Hawai‘i is right behind at No. 48.  Two schools – UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara – entered the poll at No. 49 and No. 65, respectively.

Hilt-Costello Inches Closer To Career Milestone
Led by 17th-year head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello, the Long Beach State squad could allow her to reach a career milestone this week. Hilt-Costello’s career record improved to 298-130 (.696) following last week’s win against Cal Poly.  Hilt-Costello would get to win No. 300 should the 49ers succeed this week in northern California.  In Big West regular season matches, the 49ers are an astounding 71-3 (.960) since the conference instituted round-robin play in 2006.

Edles Hits Career Milestone
UC Irvine gifted head coach a milestone victory of his own thanks to a 4-3 victory, one of three straight that have gone the distance, at Hawai‘i-Pacific last week.  Edles is now 251-170 (.596) in his 19th season.

A Dozen Years At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 12th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States, also a host of the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 23-26.
