Hefflin Finishes Eighth To Pace Big West Runners At West Regional

UC Riverside's Raquel Hefflin led all Big West runners with an eighth place finish at the NCAA West Regional Championship Friday morning, the top finish of any women's or men's runner from the conference.
The 2014 Big West cross country Women's Athlete of the Year finished the 6K course at the Stanford Golf Course in 20:27.1, the lone Big West runner to finish in the top 10. The women's race was won by Arizona State's Shelby Houlihan who ran an impressive 19:31.6.
In the grueling men's 10K, the top Big West runner was UC Santa Barbara's Anthony Ortolan who finished in 23rd with a 30:00.9. The race was won by the Cardinal's Maxim Korolev who outlasted Oregon's Edward Cheserek in 29:33.5.
The top women's team from the Big West was 2014 champion UC Davis with an 11th place finish out of the 34 participating clubs. Christine Hoffman led the way in 23rd place at 20:54.4, with Clara MacLeod giving the Aggies two top 50 finishers with a 47th place showing at 21:20.6.
UC Santa Barbara finished in seventh place on the men's side, the best showing among Big West clubs. The 2014 Big West champions had Ortolan leading the way, but showed impressive depth with Bryan Guijarro in 31st (30:11.2), Bryce Rausa in 38th (30:17.3), Shyan Vaziri in 49th (30:26.8) and Anthony Monroy in 55th (30:32.8).
With the top two clubs and the top four individuals not a part of those teams earning automatic berths, teams and individuals will wait to see if they earn at-large invites to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind on November 22. Those selections will be announced Saturday.
