Final Weekend of Competition Features Titan Invitational

Big West Cross Country Weekly Release No. 9

The final weekend of the regular season has three clubs in action as teams gear up for the Big West Championships next Saturday in Riverside.

Cal State Fullerton will welcome all comers for the Titan Invitational, an event held on the CSF campus. The course starts and finishes adjacent to the Titan Track and Field Complex at the grass recreational fields. The Titans will see conference rivals UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara among the competing teams in the field.

• UC Riverside’s senior duo of Seth Totten and Raquel Hefflin had a record-breaking day at the Highlander Invitational. Totten finished the 6K men’s race in a course-best time of 17:27.7, while Hefflin’s time of 16:46.6 was a school record in the 5K. Both runners were tops in each race.

• Cal Poly’s teams posted top three finishes at the Bronco Invitational last weekend. The women, who finished only behind nationally-ranked Oklahoma State, were led by Meghan Breadmore (17th - 20:55), Sydney Szabo (18th - 20:57) and Ashley Windsor (19th - 21:01) who recorded top 20 finishes in the 6K race.

The Mustang men were third overall, behind only nationally-ranked clubs Oklahoma State and Stanford. Luis Morales led the way with an 11th place showing in 24:00, while Clayton Hutchins (16th - 24:03) and Eric Hayden (20th - 24:04) gave Cal Poly three top 20 finishers in the 8K jaunt.

• UC Davis had a preview of the national championship course as the clubs competed in the Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind. The Aggie men finished 13th in the men’s 8K white race led by Brandon Pugh’s 29th place showing in 25:46.4. The women competed in the women’s 6K blue race with Christine Hoffman coming in as the top finisher in 17th place. She ran the course in 21:11.0.

• The Big West Championships return to the Inland Empire this season as UC Riverside will host the event at the Ag/Ops Course. This will be the sixth time in the last eight seasons that UCR has hosted the league meet. Last season in San Luis Obispo, homestanding Cal Poly swept the men’s and women’s championship. The Mustangs also swept the teams titles in 2012, the last time UC Riverside hosted the meet.
