Records Fall As Highlander Duo Claim Weekly Honors
UC Riverside seniors Seth Totten and Raquel Hefflin garnered Big West Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors as both competitors captured first place at the Highlander Invitational.
Totten Breaks Course Record
Totten (Newhall, Calif./Golden Valley HS) won the Highlander Invitational Saturday morning in a course-record time of 17:27.7.
In setting a new personal-best mark for a 6k race, Totten topped the previous course record by almost 10 seconds. Additionally, he defeated his closest competitor – runner up Alex Tebbe of UC Irvine – by 24 seconds.
Totten’s effort helped the Highlanders win the team portion of the invitational out of seven squads.

Hefflin Sets School Record In Victory
Hefflin (Compton, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) set a school and personal record with her winning time of 16:46.6 at the eight-team Highlander Invitational Saturday morning.
The time bested the previous school record by five and a half seconds, and topped her own personal-best 5k time by around 25 seconds. Hefflin’s performance led to the Highlanders taking the team title, which UCR has accomplished twice in the last three years.
This also was Hefflin’s second consecutive individual victory at the Highlander Invitational. Hefflin out-dueled CSUN’s Elizabeth Nelson, who finished as runner up in 17:01.4, by 15 seconds.
