Big West Cross Country Release No. 7

UC Irvine and Hawai’i are the lone teams in competition this weekend, a light slate for the league’s cross country clubs three weeks from the conference championships.

The Anteaters will send a contingent to a local meet, the Vanguard Invitational, while the Rainbow Wahine will return to the trails of the Chaminade Invitational. Both UCI and UH both competed last at the Stanford Invitational on September 27.

• Cal State Fullerton was the lone team in competition last weekend, taking part in the Rim Rock Farm Classic hosted by Kansas. It was the first time the CSF squads had competed in the event.

The Titan men came through with a third place finish, just one point shy of second place Nebraska-Kearney. Sophomore Danny Ramirez was the top finisher for the club, crossing the line after a time of 25:14.0 in the 8K. That time was a season-best effort for Ramirez.

The CSF women’s contingent was led by Emily Taylor, who ran the 6K in 22:25.5 for eighth place. Taylor led the squad to a fourth place finish in the 12-team field.

• Looking ahead to next week, all nine clubs will be in competition with several sending split squads to meets. The docket includes the Highlander Invitational hosted by UC Riverside, the Pre-National Invitational hosted by Indiana State and the Cal Poly Invitational.

• Several Big West clubs are listed among the top teams in the region. On the men’s side, UC Santa Barbara leads the way with an 10th place ranking, while defending champion Cal Poly comes in at No. 13. The women’s regional rankings showcases UC Davis and Cal Poly in eighth and 10th, respectively.

• The Big West Championships return to the Inland Empire this season as UC Riverside will host the event at the Ag/Ops Course. This will be the sixth time in the last eight seasons that UCR has hosted the league meet. Last season in San Luis Obispo, homestanding Cal Poly swept the men’s and women’s championship. The Mustangs also swept the teams titles in 2012, the last time UC Riverside hosted the meet.
