Guijarro, Hefflin Capture Cross Country Honors
UC Santa Barbara junior Bryan Guijarro and UC Riverside senior Raquel Hefflin earned Big West Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week accolades after winning their respective races to open the 2014 cross country season.
Guijarro Wins UCSB Lagoon Open
Junior Bryan Guijarro (Lancaster, Calif./William J. Pete Knight HS) led a UC Santa Barbara sweep of the top six spots to win the annual Lagoon Race against Blue-Green rival Cal Poly, and earn the Big West Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week award.
Guijarro ran the 8K course in 24:50.36 to outdistance teammate Anthony Ortolan, who finished in 24:53.77. The Gauchos won the competition by a score of 15-40.
Guijarro, the 2012 Big West Men’s Freshman of the Year, returns to action with the Gauchos on Sept. 13 at the UC Riverside Invitational.

Hefflin Sets Course Record In First Place Finish
UC Riverside senior Raquel Hefflin (Compton, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) garnered Big West Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week laurels after winning the Nevada Twilight Classic and setting a course record in the process.
Hefflin won the 4K race in a time of 14:06, besting her closest competitor by 23 seconds.
She helped the Highlanders, which are ranked 13th in the West Region, to a third place finish out of six teams, including ahead of UCLA. The Bruins are ranked eighth in the most recent USTFCCCA poll. The teams that placed ahead of UC Riverside (Nevada and Utah) are ranked 10th and 7th respectively in the mountain region.
