Men's Tennis Teams Hunker Down At Home This Week

3/6/2014

Tennis Weekly Release No. 8

All six Big West men's tennis squads compete at home this week, and Hawai‘i plays its first match in more than a month against No. 39 Michigan.

BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

UC Irvine Attempts To Draw Even With Long Beach State
Periennal combatants in the race for the Big West women’s tennis crown, Long Beach State and UC Irvine are once again at the top of the pack.  The 49ers are 4-0 in league play, and, while they contest their next seven matches at home during the month of March, they do not compete in another Big West match until April 4 at UC Santa Barbara.  That gives UC Irvine, currently 3-0 in conference, the chance to even things up in the standings.  The Anteaters host Cal State Northridge on Saturday to continue a nine-match homestand.  UCI started out the homestand with Big West triumphs against UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.  CSUN, which pushed LBSU to the limit in a 4-3 loss on Feb. 21, is 2-1 in Big West competition.

Aggies Make The Trek To Central Coast
Winners of three of its last four matches, UC Davis is slated for a pair of conference encounters this weekend against Central Coast foes UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.  The Aggies are 1-1 in league play, and return home for six straight contests following this weekend’s Big West tilts.  The Gauchos also are 1-1 in the Big West, and are coming up two tough 4-3 road losses to San Jose State and No. 64 Santa Clara.  The Mustangs (0-2) are seeking their first Big West win.

Rankings Update
The latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings came out Wednesday with Long Beach State ranked No. 57.  The 49ers host Tulane and Montana this week  The UC Irvine duo of Marivick Mamiit and Sarah Stadfelt is ranked No. 56 nationally in doubles.

Home Sweet Home
All six Big West men’s schools get the opportunity to play at home this week.  An eager Hawai‘i squad returns to the court for the first time in over a month when it hosts No. 39 Michigan on Thursday.  The Rainbow Warriors have not played a match since Feb. 1 against Pacific.  UH and UC Santa Barbara were scheduled to play a Big West match on Feb. 16 in Honolulu, but it was washed out due to rain.  Cal Poly hosts St. John’s and UNLV, while UCSB welcomes Georgetown and Radford.  UC Irvine has Boston College and UNLV at home, while UC Riverside sandwiches home matches against Villanova and Georgetown around a road date with No. 5 USC.  UC Davis hosts Montana and Sonoma State in a doubleheader on Saturday.

A Decade And More At Indian Wells
Indian Wells Tennis Garden is hosting the Big West Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship for the 11th consecutive year.  One of the premier facilities in the United States that also hosts the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells will host all six men’s and nine women’s teams from April 24-27.  The Long Beach State women won the tournament championship for the nine time in the last 10 years, while the UC Santa Barbara men became the first No. 5 seed to earn the title.
