Titan Invitational Takes Center Stage in Light Cross Country Weekend
Big West Cross Country Release No. 9
Preparations for the Big West Cross Country Championships have reached the final week as a light schedule is all that remains before the league meet in San Luis Obispo.
This weekend’s schedule has just one meet on the docket but three conference clubs will be competing in it. Cal State Fullerton hosts the Titan Invitational. Fellow Big West teams UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara will join in the meet being held at Titan Track Complex on Friday afternoon. The clubs in attendance will run a women’s 5K race and a men’s 8K in a course that runs through the Titan Sports Complex.
• One of the top races in America, the Pre-Nationals, had a host of solid performances by Big West athletes. The Cal Poly men’s contingent finished 12th overall in the blue race, led by senior Sean Davidson’s 17th-place finish with a time of 23:47.92 over the 8K course. The UC Davis men also competed in the blue race, coming in 20th in the 52 team field. Trevor Halstead was the top finisher for the Aggies in 52nd place at 24:14.0. The Long Beach State men also had a solid showing in the white race, coming in 10th overall. The 49ers were led by Chris Enriquez who ran a 24:59.0 to finish eighth overall.
The Mustang women also competed in the Pre-Nationals blue race, finishing 17th overall. The contingent was led by Diana George in 76th out of 340 thanks to a time of 21:17.4 over the 6K race.
• UC Riverside’s women’s team had a solid showing at the UCR Invitational, finishing second overall just 10 points behind the winning contingent from Wyoming. Raquel Hefflin topped all runners with a 17:09.50 over the 5K course, one of three UCR runners to finish in the top 10.
Conversely, the UC Irvine men were the top finishers among Big West clubs in the men’s race with a second place showing. UCI was led by Alex Tebbe’s sixth place finish in the 8K, crossing the finish line in 17:55.40. Teammate Riley Martin was two spots behind him in eighth at 17:59.9
• UC Irvine head coach Vince O’Boyle, the second-longest tenured head coach in UC Irvine Athletics history, has announced his retirement, effective Dec. 31. O’Boyle is in his 32nd season as head coach of the Anteater men’s and women’s cross country programs, and 30th as director of the UCI men’s and women’s track & field programs after serving two seasons as an assistant track coach. During his UCI career, O’Boyle has been named Big West Conference Coach of the Year 20 times in cross country and track & field.
• After five consecutive seasons, Big West Cross Country Championships will move from Riverside to San Luis Obispo. Fairbanks Cross Country Course will host the championship meet, the same site that hosted the event back in 2007. During that championship, the Cal Poly men won their fifth straight title thanks to a clean sweep of the first five positions. UC Santa Barbara took the women’s title, its fourth in five seasons.
