10/8/2013

Cal Poly senior Sean Davidson and UC Davis senior Sarah Sumpter captured second place finishes at a highly competitive Inter-Regional Jamboree meet to earn Big West Cross Country Men's and Women's Athlete of the Week acclaim.

Davidson Sparks Team and Individual Runner-Up Showing

Senior Sean Davidson spearheaded an impressive second place showing for Cal Poly with a runner-up finish of his own at the Inter-Regional Jamboree, claiming Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.

The Simi Valley, Calif. native clocked a 23:30 over the 8,000-meters at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course.  He finished just two seconds behind individual champion Rajpaul Pannu of Saint Mary's.  Davidson's effort paced a solid Mustang performance as the team had 67 points and trailed only team champion UCLA's 54.

Cal Poly entered the race ranked eighth in the West Region and outdueled three other regionally ranked squads in California, UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis.

The meet was a preview of the NCAA West Regional, held at the same course and featuring many of the same teams as the Nov. 15 event.

Others nominated: Chris Enriquez (Long Beach State); Anthony Ortolan (UC Santa Barbara)

Sumpter Leads Aggies to Second Place Finish

UC Davis senior Sarah Sumpter (Cloverdale, Calif./Healdsburg HS) finished second among 156 runners at the Sacramento State-hosted Inter-Regional Jamboree and earned Big West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week accolades.

Sumpter recorded a time of 16 minutes and 36 seconds on the 5K Haggin Oaks Golf Course to outdistance UCLA's Kelsey Smith by four seconds and finish just short of individual champion Kelsey Santisteban of Cal, who clocked in at 16:23.

The Aggies placed third as a team with 88 points behind UCLA and Cal Poly, which finished one-two with 77 and 78 points, respectively.  UC Davis was one of six ranked teams from the West Region participating in the meet.  The meet served as a preview of the Nov. 15 NCAA West Regional, which will be hosted on the same course.
