Thanks to a stellar basketball season from its teams, Cal Poly has increased its lead in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, strengthening its bid for the first Cup in program history.

With the women tying for second and the men posting a third place showing, the Mustangs collected 330 points for an average of 165.0, upping their overall point average to 150.0 across seven sports.

Second place following the winter season belongs to two-time defending Commissioner’s Cup champion Long Beach State, which moved up on the strength of a men’s basketball regular season title. The 49ers collected 330 points to move their overall average to 138.3 across their six sports after two seasons.

Rounding out the top three is newcomer Hawai’i, which has an overall average of 128.0. The Wahine tied for second in women’s hoops, while the Warriors’ fifth place finish gave UH 350 points for the winter.

Four other teams have triple digit overall averages, upping the total to seven 100+ average teams after six clubs reached the threshold following the fall. UC Davis leads the contingent at 121.4, while Pacific (104.0), Cal State Northridge (102.9) and UC Santa Barbara (101.4) are behind the Aggies. The Tigers 64-point jump from the fall to the winter was the best in the conference, aided by a regular season title by their women’s hoops team and a second place finish by the men.

The Big West Commissioner's Cup, which started during the 1998-99 season, is presented at the end of the spring season to the institution with the top overall point average tallied from Big West Conference Championships.  To determine the champion for the Commissioner’s Cup, total points are summed and divided by the number of championships in which each institution competes.  Each sport regular season champion is also given a 20-point bonus.
