Cal Poly junior Andre Dome highlighted the announcement of the 2012 men's tennis all-conference team as the Big West Player of the Year. UC Santa Barbara's Marty Davis was named Coach of the Year and UC Irvine's Jacob Jung the Freshman of the Year to round out the top awards.
Dome becomes the second individual from Cal Poly – and first since Chris Magyary in 1998 – to claim Player of the Year honors. Dome dominated Big West competition with a 7-0 record and did not drop a set in any match. He posted a 16-4 record overall in dual matches at the No. 1 singles position. The junior is currently No. 40 in the nation in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings and has defeated six nationally ranked opponents this season. Among his top victories included No. 43 Georgy Batrakov of BYU and No. 44 Matija Pecotic of Princeton, both in straight sets. Dome won 11 straight matches at one point this season and all 16 of his triumphs have come in straight sets.
Davis won Coach of the Year honors for the seventh time in his 14th year at the helm of UC Santa Barbara. The seven COY awards is an all-time Big West record, surpassing the six that former UC Irvine head coach Greg Patton stockpiled from 1981-97. Davis helped the Gauchos to a 14-10 overall record and 4-1 mark in the Big West, good for second place. His team played a typically tough non-conference schedule that featured 10 ranked opponents. The Gauchos defeated No. 36 BYU and No. 22 Texas Tech. Davis came up just short of winning his eighth Big West Tournament title when the Gauchos lost to Cal Poly in the championship match.
Jung is the second straight Anteater and third overall to receive Freshman of the Year acclaim. He joins teammate Ryan Cheung (2011) and Victor Lamm (2005) on the list. The native of Upland, Calif., played anywhere from No. 2 to No. 4 singles and amassed a 10-9 dual match record. He sported a 4-0 record against Big West opponents and won five of his last six matches. Jung also prevailed in a host of three-set matches, going 5-2 overall.
