This Week in the Big West - April 18-24, 2011
This week opens with the 2011 Big West Women's Golf Championship at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. The event is the first of five spring championships over the next moth, with men's golf, men's and women's tennis, and women's water polo all racing to their season-ending events.
Defending champion Cal State Fullerton sits atop the Big West Conference standings with a near-perfect 8-1 record. UC Irvine and Cal Poly find themselves knotted in second place with a 6-3 mark with Long Beach State sitting a game back in fourth at 5-4. The second-place Mustangs welcome the league-leading Titans to Baggett Stadium for a three-game series beginning Thursday, April 21 at 6:00 p.m.
UC Davis took a break from conference play last week to battle the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners. This week the Aggies return to league play when they visit Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark to battle second place UC Irvine. The Anteaters, who have won three of their last four contests, own an unblemished 14-0 mark at home this year.
Long Beach State looks to win its second-straight conference series this week when it visits UC Santa Barbara, who's coming off a tightly-contested series against Cal State Fullerton. Unfortunately, the Gauchos dropped all three-contests by one-run each.
Pacific and Cal State Northridge also square off this week at Matador Field for a three-game stint scheduled from Thursday, April 21-Saturday, April 23. The Matadors are still in the hunt for their first Big West victory of the 2011 season.

Nationally ranked teams Cal Poly and UC Irvine – undefeated at 4-0 in conference play – meet in San Luis Obispo on Saturday to decide the men's tennis regular season championship and No. 1 seed in next week's Big West Tournament.
Long Beach State and Cal Poly finished 7-1 in conference play to earn a share of the Big West Women’s Tennis regular season championship. By virtue of a 6-1 win against Cal Poly on April 9, the 49ers claimed the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed at next week’s Big West Tournament.
The 2011 Big West Men's and Women's Tennis Championships are a scant month away a Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, April 28 through May 2.

Women's Water Polo
UC Irvine looks to close out an unblemished conference schedule as the 4-0 Anteaters make the short trek to Long Beach State for a Thursday night encounter under the lights. The Anteaters have already wrapped up the Big West regular season title and No. 1 seed for next week's tournament.
UC Santa Barbara is the host institution for the 2011 Big West Women's Water Polo Championships this spring, April 29 through May 2.
