Long Beach State continues to hold the lead in the 2010-11 Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup race after the conclusion of conference play during the winter sports season. The 49ers won the Men’s Basketball regular season title, which gave them 200 points and helped raise their overall average to 138.3 points.
Cal Poly was one of two teams to move up in the standings, leaping central coast rival UC Santa Barbara. Cal Poly tied for the regular season Women’s Basketball title and finished second in Men’s Basketball. The Mustangs saw their average raise nearly 15 points to 132.9.
UC Santa Barbara, the current cup holder, fell to third place with a 131.4-point average. The Gauchos won a share of the Women’s Basketball crown and finished in fourth place in Men’s Basketball.
Pacific was the only other team to gain ground in the winter. The Tigers moved from seventh to sixth place, passing Cal State Fullerton. UC Irvine, UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge remained in their same positions in the standings.
The Big West Commissioner’s Cup, which started during the 1998-99 season, is presented at the end of the spring season to the institution with the top overall point average tallied from Big West Conference Championships. To determine the champion for the Commissioner’s Cup, total points are summed and divided by the number of championships in which each institution competes. Each sport champion is also given a 20-point bonus.
