This Week in the Big West - February 7-13, 2011

Less than a month until the 2011 ampm Big West Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament at Honda Center! The second half continues this week, with the Cal Poly women and Long Beach State men atop the standings. Meanwhile, spring is in the air with golf, tennis and women's water polo underway; baseball and softball are just a couple weeks away!
Men's Basketball
Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge sit two games back of men's basketball leader Long Beach State, which returns to action this week after an 11-day hiatus. The 49ers and Matadors hook up for a Saturday showdown at The Matadome, while UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara meet in a televised match-up from Irvine on Fox Sports West.
For the sixth year in a row, all home and conference games will be broadcast by the institutions on BigWest.TV, the conference's video streaming initiative in partnership with CBS College Sports.

Women's Basketball
As the season winds down, teams are battling for position for the Big West Women's Basketball Tournament and its new tournament. This year the top four teams host the first round of the tournament at their respective courts. As the teams are jockeying for position, this week marks a perfect opportunity for a few teams to get a slight edge over their opponents. Third place UC Riverside (6-3) travels to fourth place UC Santa Barbara (6-4) Saturday afternoon. The Gauchos are looking for redemption after UC Riverside recorded its largest win in the Div. I history of the program back on Jan. 15 with an 81-48 victory over the Gauchos. The fourth-place Gauchos also battle fifth place UC Irvine (5-5) Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Women's Basketball Weekly Release #13
Golf
The UC Irvine men will host the Anteater Invitational on Monday and Tuesday to start the week, with conference foes Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara participating. Beginning on Sunday, February 13, the Long Beach State men will host the Battle at the Beach, running through Tuesday, February 15.
On the women's side, UC Davis will begin their spring at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tuscon Monday and Tuesday
Golf February News & Notes
Softball
The first full week of February will have a familiar ping to it as the eight Big West softball teams hit the diamond for their season openers. This week will see clubs hit locales from the shores of Hawai'i to the desert of Arizona for tournament play, but Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara will host tournaments at their home stadiums.

Tennis
The Cal Poly men's tennis team has parlayed a 5-1 start into national recognition, entering the Campbell/ITA rankings at No. 75 this week. The Mustangs play seven of their next nine matches at home, but do not return to action until Saturday, Feb. 19 against Sacramento State.
Home cooking is the theme for the women’s schedule this week. Ten of the 14 matches against non-conference foes will be played on Big West home courts. UC Irvine hosts Nevada and Wyoming, Cal Poly welcomes Cal State Bakersfield and Loyola Marymount, and Long Beach State entertains Hawai’i and Nevada as part of a busy week for the trio.
The 2011 Big West Men's and Women's Tennis Championships are a scant three months away a Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, April 28 through May 2.

Women's Water Polo
Four Big West schools trek to La Jolla to compete in the 16-team Triton Invitational to highlight the week's action in women's water polo. Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara were paired together in one of four groups and meet each other in a noon showdown on Saturday.
UC Santa Barbara will be the host institution for the 2011 Big West Women's Water Polo Championships this spring, April 29 through May 2.
