This Week in the Big West - November 1-7, 2010
The fall Big West Championship run continues with the Big West Women's Soccer Tournament this week. And as the women's programs get closer to the automatic NCAA berth, the men's soccer squads look to their final week of regular-season play with both the Big West regular-season crown up for grabs as well as spots in next week's Big West Men's Soccer Tournament. Women's volleyball continues their race in the middle of the second half of league play with just a game and a half separating the top six teams.
The final week of the men's soccer regular season still leaves questions to be answered, with the regular-season conference title up for grabs as well as two spots in next week's Big West Men's Soccer Tournament. Nationally-ranked teams UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara have earned spots in the tournament, but are still vying for the claim on the Big West regular-season championship. Meanwhile, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, UC Davis and UC Riverside all have a chance of making the tournament field. Also this week are Senior Nights for all the Big West programs. If you get a chance, please take some time and thank your seniors for their hard work and dedication!
Things could be settled on Wednesday night, with three matches on tap. UC Irvine will host Cal State Northridge at 7:00 p.m. PT, with a win giving the Anteaters the outright Big West title. Cal Poly welcomes Cal State Fullerton while UC Riverside squares off against UC Davis, also at 7:00 p.m. PT. Wins by the Titans and Aggies will seal the final two spots in the Big West Tournament.
The three final matches of the regular season schedule will take place on Saturday, with Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara hosting. The Titans meet UC Irvine, the Matadors face Cal Poly and the Gauchos take on UC Riverside, all at 7:00 p.m.
The Cal State Fullerton-UC Irvine match will be broadcast on BigWest.TV by Cal State Fullerton Athletics. This is the fourth year in a row that select Cal State Fullerton men's & women's soccer matches have aired on BigWest.TV.
The Big West Men's Soccer Tournament is just a week away, with semifinal matches scheduled for Wednesday, November 10 and the championship final on Saturday, November 30. UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara will host semi-finals, with opponents and times to be determined.
