Big West Conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell today unveiled the 2010-11 Big West basketball television schedule, featuring 19 games on the ESPN family of networks and Fox Sports Net.
The package is highlighted with five nationally televised men’s basketball regular season conference games on ESPN2 and ESPNU, with an additional seven regionally televised regular season games on PRIME TICKET and Fox Sports West. The Big West is in the third year of a five-year agreement with ESPN.
Three additional national broadcasts will appear on the package. Cal State Northridge will compete on the ESPN family of networks for three games in the 76 CLASSIC, the annual eight team men’s basketball Thanksgiving tournament hosted by the Big West at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Matadors take on Virginia Tech in a Thanksgiving Day showdown on ESPNU.
Additionally, the assortment of games includes four live broadcasts from Honda Center, the new home of the Big West Basketball Tournament. Two men’s semifinal games on Friday, March 11 will be aired at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. (PT) on ESPNU. The men’s championship game on Saturday, March 12 will be shown on ESPN2 at 5:00 p.m. The Big West women’s championship game will be televised on Fox for the 14th consecutive season. PRIME TICKET provides all the action at 1:00 p.m. (PT) on March 12.
The Big West package potentially could grow in exposures with the ninth annual ESPN sponsored BracketBusters event. BracketBusters is a three-day men’s basketball extravaganza pitting NCAA Tournament hopefuls from a variety of NCAA Division I conferences. Eleven televised contests will be selected from a pool of teams and will be shown on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU. The BracketBusters matchups, game times and network assignments will be announced in early February.
“We are delighted to continue our loyal partnerships with ESPN and Fox as the 19 guaranteed broadcasts represent a great opportunity for our schools to receive national and regional exposure,” said Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell. “We look forward to some very exciting games on both of these networks.”
All nine Big West schools will appear at least once in the television package and games will take place from at least six different campus sites.
The conference package tips off in earnest Tuesday, December 28 with perhaps the most anticipated encounter. Long Beach State travels to UC Santa Barbara in a rematch of the 2010 Big West Tournament championship game, which the Gauchos won 69-64. The ESPNU broadcast tips off at 8:00 p.m. (PT). On Saturday, January 8, Cal State Fullerton heads to UC Riverside to commence the FOX package at 7:30 p.m. on PRIME TICKET. The busiest day on the television schedule is Saturday, February 26. Three “Wild Card” games will be selected from a pool of conference battles to be aired on ESPN2, ESPNU and FS West.
