This Week in the Big West - Sept. 27-Oct. 3, 2010
Conference play begins for men's and women's soccer, joining women's volleyball, which began league play last week. Last year's regular-season champions UC Santa Barbara (men's soccer) and Cal Poly (women's soccer) begin their title defenses on the road, and two-time defending women's volleyball champs Long Beach State will also travel this week. Early-week non-conference matches get things going before the races for the Big West titles begin.
The quest for the Big West title begins Wednesday, with the first three of seven men's soccer matches on the schedule this week. Defending Big West regular-season champions UC Santa Barbara will open on the road at Cal State Fullerton in a match to be broadcast on BigWest.TV. The Gauchos are coming off a 2-0 victory over nationally-ranked UCLA in which they drew an NCAA regular-season record 15.896 fans, while the Titans lost a narrow match, 3-2 to UCLA. In other Wednesday action, UC Irvine will host UC Riverside and Cal Poly faces Cal State Bakersfield. The 'Eaters are a Big West-best 7-1-0 on the year.
Four matches are on tap for Saturday, with Cal State Fullerton, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara hosting Big West tilts. Nationally-ranked UC Irvine will also be in action, on the road in Des Moines, Iowa to take on Drake.
Select Cal State Fullerton matches will be broadcast on BigWest.TV this season, the fourth year in a row the Titans have elected to air contests live.
Men's Soccer Weekly Release #5
Eleven matches are the schedule this week, with play beginning on Monday as Cal State Northridge hosts San Diego. Conference play opens on Friday, four league matches and a non-conference battle. Defending regular-season champs Cal Poly are on the road at Long Beach State, while Big West Tournament champions UC Santa Barbara travel to Riverside to face the Highlanders. Meanwhile, the hottest team in the Big West, UC Irvine, hosts Pacific to start things off. Cal State Northridge and UC Davis will square off in the fourth conference match of the day, while Cal State Fullerton travels to Loyola Marymount.
Five more matches are set for Sunday, with Cal State Northridge hosting Pacific, Long Beach State hosting UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and UC Davis squaring off and Cal Poly at UC Riverside. Cal State Fullerton will play their second non-conference match of the weekend as they host San Diego on BigWest.TV.

Women's Soccer Release #7
The chase for the Big West title is off and running after the opening of conference play last weekend. The top three teams in conference play are all at home this week, including the hottest team in the Big West, the Cal Poly Mustangs, winners of ten-straight matches. Cal Poly, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara have opened the league portion of the schedule with 2-0 records. On Friday, the Mustangs will meet Cal State Fullerton, while UC Davis welcomes Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara takes on defending Big West champs Long Beach State. The evening's fourth match will feature the Pacific Tigers hosting UC Irvine.
Teams return to action on Saturday, with everybody swapping opponents. Central Coast teams Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara will face each other's Friday night opponent, while Northern California teams UC Davis and Pacific trade their competition. In addition, UC Riverside will host Cal State Bakersfield in a non-conference match.
For the fifth year in a row, all home and conference matches be broadcast by Big West institutions live on the conference's Internet-streaming initiative BigWest.TV.
