Daniel Bibona and Cal State Fullerton position players
Gary Brown and
Christian Colon represent the Big West on an updated 60-man Golden Spikes Award Watch List. The Golden Spikes Award recognizes the top amateur baseball player in the country.
Bibona has put up stellar numbers in his senior season at UC Irvine. The southpaw leads the Big West in ERA (2.20), opponent batting average (.209), wins (8) and strikeouts (94). In the latest NCAA statistics, he is tied for seventh in the country in strikeouts and tied for 13th in victories. With a career record of 30-7, Bibona is one victory shy of entering the Big West top 10 record book.
Brown is a dominant figure at the plate for Cal State Fullerton. He leads the Big West in seven offensive categories, including batting average (.450), runs scored (52), hits (81) and stolen bases (27). His 24 multi-hit games ties for the conference lead. His .450 average currently places him second all-time on the Big West single-season charts. In addition, the outfielder is perched in the league's career top 10 in triples and stolen bases.
Colon is one of the key reasons Cal State Fullerton tops the Big West in hitting at .338. The junior shortstop is batting .335 with 12 home runs, 47 runs scored and 36 RBI this season. In the Big West, he ranks fourth in slugging percentage (.623), ninth in hits (56) and tied for seventh in RBI. He leads the league in home runs and ranks second with 26 walks.
On the heels of the 50-man preseason list released in February, the updated version includes 23 new athletes who have played themselves into consideration, while there are 13 names that have been removed. The watch list will continue to be a "rolling list" up until June 1 when 30 semifinalists are announced.
Texas leads all schools with five players named to the watch list. Florida State, Georgia Tech and Louisiana State are tied for second with three names each. Arkansas, Cal State Fullerton, Coastal Carolina, Texas A&M, UCLA, Virginia and Virginia Tech each have two.
The ACC tops all conferences with 13 watch list players. Other leaders include the SEC with 10 athletes, the Big 12 with eight, Conference USA with five and the Big West, Ohio Valley and Pac-10 with three each.
