The top four seeds held at Indian Wells Tennis Garden as Cal Poly, Long Beach State, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara won Big West Women's Tennis Tournament quarterfinal matches Friday.  In Saturday's semifinals, the 49ers and Mustangs meet in one match while the Anteaters and Gauchos square off in another.

UC Irvine Outlasts Pacific

UC Irvine defeated Pacific by a score of 4-2 in a closely contested quarterfinal match on Friday.

The Anteaters claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.  Brooke Bartlett and April Bisharat defeated Christina Goehl and Olga Gumenyuk, 8-4, at No. 3.  But Pacific responded with a win at No. 1, as Jenifer Widjaja and Sasha Fisher downed Hannah Holladay and Rebecca Kwan, 8-3.  UCI won the point when Courtney Byron and Kristina Smith beat Julia Hansen and Sarah Irvin.

Pacific evened the match at 1-1 when Hansen recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Stephanie Hammel at No. 3 singles in what was Hammel's first action in well over a month.

The lead see-sawed as UCI went up 2-1 on Kwan's win at No. 5 against Kateryna Nezhura, followed a match-tying 6-3, 6-3 decision by Widjaja over Byron.

UCI turned to a pair of freshmen to secure the win.  Smith outlasted Sasha Fisher at No. 6 by a 6-3, 6-4 count to give the Anteaters a 3-2 lead.  Bisharat closed things out in her 7-6 (2), 6-1 triumph against Goehl at No. 2.

The Anteaters moved to 11-10 on the season with the win.  The Tigers finished their season at 8-14.

Cal Poly Captures Hard Fought Win Against Cal State Northridge

Cal Poly battled to a 4-1 win against Cal State Northridge in a women's quarterfinal match Friday.

The Mustangs got wins from their top two players and another from the No. 6 player in their singles order, and won the doubles point for the 18th time in 22 spring matches.

Brittany Blalock picked up the deciding point at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs.  She defeated CSUN's Nina Jaworowski 7-6 (2), 6-1 to seal the victory.

Suzie Matzenauer rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 win against Brooke Doane at No. 2 and Jocelyn Davis won a 6-3, 7-5 joust against Matador Anna Yang at No. 6.  The Matadors got on the board at No. 3 singles when Nigora Sirojiddinova triumphed in three sets against Steffi Wong, defeating the senior 6-1, 2-6, 6-0.

The Matadors had a match point at No. 5 singles and the No. 4 match just entered the third set when Blalock closed out the proceedings.

Cal Poly got the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

The Mustangs improved to 16-6 on the year while the Matadors finished their 2010 campaign at 12-8.

Cal Poly takes on No. 1 seed Long Beach State on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. in semifinal action.

Long Beach State Blanks Cal State Fullerton, 4-0

Top-seeded Long Beach State knocked off No. 8 seed Cal State Fullerton, 4-0, in a women's tennis quarterfinal match Friday morning.

The 49ers earned the doubles point when Sarah Cantlay and Julie Luzar beat Erin Wiesener and Karina Ahkmedova at No. 3, 8-1.  Earlier, Anais Dallara and Deborah Armstrong toppled Jaycee Cruz and Malorie dela Cruz, 8-2, at No. 2.

LBSU wrapped up the match with three quick points in succession in singles play.  Cantlay got things started with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of Lani Agsalud at No. 6.  Dallara followed with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 2 over Monica Rodriguez.  Rachel Manasse clinched the match at No. 4, defeating Jaycee Cruz 6-1, 6-1.

Action at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles were discontinued after the match's conclusion.

The 49ers improved to 18-5 on the year.  They will meet the winner of Cal Poly-Cal State Northridge in Saturday's semifinals at 9:00 a.m.

The Titans ended the year at 4-16.

UC Santa Barbara Topples UC Davis, 4-1

No. 2 seed UC Santa Barbara picked up a 4-1 win against No. 7 seed UC Davis in a women's tennis quarterfinal Friday morning.

The Gauchos got off to a good start by capturing the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.  Jill Damion and Asagi Onaga finished their match first with an 8-0 triumph at No. 3 over Noelle Eades and Lauren Curry.  Tova Hausman and Bryanna Ojeda collected the doubles point for UCSB after dispatching Desiree Stone and Herzyl Legaspi by an 8-3 score at No. 1.

UC Davis tied the match as Dahra Zamudio rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Natalia Lozano.  Zamudio finished the season winning 10 of her last 11 matches.

From there, the Gauchos reeled off three straight points to take the victory.  Damion topped Curry 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.  Ojeda improved to 14-0 on the year in duals with her 6-2, 6-2 win against Sidney Brady.  UCSB closed out the contest in the third position as Hausman defeated Legaspi 6-2, 6-2.

The Gauchos are now 13-10 on the year and face the winner of the UC Irvine-Pacific match in Saturday's semifinals at 9:00 a.m.

The Aggies finished the season at 9-11.
