UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara advanced to the semifinals of the Big West Men's Tennis Championship with Friday's wins over UC Riverside and UC Davis, respectively.  The Anteaters and Gauchos will play in Saturday's semifinals at 3:00 p.m. at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

UC Santa Barbara Defeats UC Davis To Move Into Semifinals

UC Santa Barbara breezed to a 4-0 win against UC Davis in a men's tennis first round match Friday.

The Gauchos improved to 14-10 on the season in winning their 11th straight Big West Tournament contest, a streak that dates back to 2005.

UCSB took control of the match early by securing the doubles point and staking a 1-0 lead.  Scott Hohenstein and Evan Jurgensen won 8-3 against Toki Sherbakov and Connor Coates at No. 3 to start things out.  Alex Konigsfeldt and Taylor Chavez-Goggin clinched the point at No. 1 with an 8-1 triumph over Nick Lopez and Hunter Lee.

In singles play, the Gauchos continued to play tough as Mathieu Forget made the score 2-0 with his 6-1, 6-1 win over Chris Aria.  The Gauchos closed the match out with two more victories, including Scott Hohenstein's 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 against Hunter Lee.  Konigsfeldt finished the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 against Sherbakov.

The Aggies completed their season at 8-13.

UCSB faces off against top seeded Cal Poly in the Big West semifinals at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.

UC Irvine Wins In Men's Tennis First Round

UC Irvine dominated at the bottom of the singles ladder to take a 4-0 victory over UC Riverside in the first round of the Big West Men's Tennis Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday.

The Anteaters won at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions in singles after claiming the doubles point.  Ryan Mayer defeated Mike Conroy 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 and Stephen Stege rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Ryan Stanbury.

The clinching point came at the No. 4 position where Steven Henderson upended Mike Conroy 6-2, 6-1.

UCI, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, won matches at No. 3 and No. 1 for the doubles points.  Zac Tsai and Henderson clinched the point with their 8-4 triumph against Quoc Doan and John Park.

The sixth-seeded Highlanders complete their season at 3-17.

UCI advances to Saturday's semifinal action against No. 2 seed Pacific at 3:00 p.m.
