There is a first time winner of the Big West Women's Golf Championship as UC Davis completed its wire-to-wire run at the San Luis Obispo Country Club for its first title in program history. The individual crown went to the Aggies' Chelsea Stelzmiller who won in a three-hole playoff against teammate Amy Simanton.
UCD had four golfers finish in the top five on its way to a 900 (298-299-303) to win the title at +36, 19 strokes better than defending champion Long Beach State. Finishing up in third was UC Irvine (925), while tournament host Cal Poly wrapped up the top four (948). Fifth place went to Cal State Northridge at 959, while UC Riverside (970) and Cal State Fullerton (995) completed the 2010 Women's Championship.
Stelzmiller (75-72-77) and Simanton (74-74-76) tied at 224 before entering the playoff. Both parred the first two playoff holes before Stelzmiller's par on the third gave her top medalist honors. It gave her a bit of redemption at the Big West Championship after losing the 2008 top medalist honor in a three-hole playoff. Long Beach State's Simone Hoey (77-75-73) shot a +1 on the third day to wrap up the tournament in third, while UC Irvine's Demi Runas, who also had a +1 for low round of the day, was fourth at 226 (77-76-73). Wrapping up the top five scorers was day one leader Alice Kim of UC Davis with a 227 (72-78-77).
UC Davis receives the Big West automatic berth into the NCAA Regional competition at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif., May 6-8. Other teams and individuals can still claim at-large selections into the Regional Championship, with the field set to be announced this Sunday.
