The first round of the 2010 Big West Women's Golf Championships is in the books and the UC Davis women find themselves atop the leaderboard after shooting a ten-over 298. The Championships are being held at San Luis Obispo Country Club and being hosted by Cal Poly.
The Aggies own an eight stroke lead over UC Irvine, who rests in second place at 306, just one stroke ahead of Long Beach State, which shot a 307. UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge rest in a tie for fourth place, tallying a 317. Cal Poly (324) is in sixth place and Cal State Fullerton (338) is in seventh.
In the individual standings, Alice Kim of UC Davis, who was in one of the first groups out on the course in the morning, an even par round of 72 to sit in the early pole position. She picked up three birdies in the opening round, but a trio of bogeys placed had back at even for the day. Kim's teammate Amy Simanton finished two strokes off the lead with a round of 74. There is a four-way tied for third which includes UC Irvine's Henna Cho, UC Riverside's Amelia Ek, Long Beach State's Reina Rogers and UC Davis' Chelsea Stelzmiller, all at three over par.
